Subject: Re: Mike Matson Date: Sun, 09 Jan 2000 18:55:04 -0500 From: Norm Olson Thanks for your interest. The poem is posted here below: PATRIOT DOWN The Ballad of Michael Matson who died at the hands of merciless pursuers May 5, 1997 Hunted and hounded neath the West Texas sun Alone and unaided, two men on the run. Tracked down by soldiers! "No Quarter" they cried. With his dream of Republic, Mike Matson died. Now his lifeblood nourishes Liberty's tree Mingled with thousands who fought to live free. And the cowards that murdered the Republic's own son Soon will be forced to be on the run! But is the parched earth of Texas worthy again To be drenched with the blood of Alamo men? Or have others defiled and shamed hallowed ground Where the graves of Travis and Bowie are found? (First Chorus:) And I see him there, standing alone Wondering where his friends all have gone And I hear his voice carry the wind "Oh, where were you my Patriot friend?" Will we add Mount Davis to the list that has grown Where others who stood---stood all alone? Remember The Alamo, and Waco my friend, For after each battle we vowed it would end! And we stand in the glare of the fast setting sun, And shamefully face the deed that we've done; For we've turned once again our back on a man Whose blood turns to dust in the dry Texas sand. (Final Chorus:) And I see him there, standing alone Wondering where his friends all have gone And I hear his voice carry the wind "Oh where were you my Patriot friend?" "I stood all alone and I fought and I died.. And with my last breath in loneliness cried: Oh where were you my Patriot friend? Can you say as before: It won't happen again?" Can you say as before......It won't happen again? Sung by Bob Cronkhite Music composed by Bob Cronkhite Written by Norman Olson I have the ballad on tape along with several other songs I wrote.
