Robert Maryland my Maryland By Robert McNabb Recently it has been posted by the Montana Militia that Maryland is now in the Militia business once more. Not in the past 140 years has Maryland had an effective Militia for the defense of her homeland. I applaud the effort by those in Maryland to rectify the injustice perpetrated by the government of Lincoln. Perhaps a study of the past will preclude the danger of repeating it. At that time Maryland was an outpost of the South, a border state. It was the first State to have her sovereignty taken away. Maryland had chosen to remain neutral in the war the United States planned to wage on the South, and had denied the U.S. troops the right of passage "through her domain in their march to invade the Southern states." Then Governor Hicks had stated that Maryland should use her influence as a means to pacify those who desired war. Though promised by Lincoln that troops would not pass through, plans all the while were being made to do so. On April 19, 1861 citizens of Baltimore attacked troops who were attempting to pass illegally through their State. Though unarmed they sought to stop the passage of U. S. troops, which they did despite the firing by the U.S. troops which killed some of the Maryland patriots. On April 20, 1861 Lincoln then promised that though troops would be brought into Maryland, his pretense for breaking his previous word was that Washington needed protection, they would not enter Baltimore. By May 5th the Relay House, at the junction of the Washington and Baltimore and Ohio railroads, was occupied by United States troops. On the 13th of same month, he moved a portion of the troops to Baltimore." Baltimore was occupied and the subsequent disarming of the Militia as well as the Police of Baltimore followed. Baltimore was disarmed. July 1st General Banks announced that "in pursuance of orders issued from headquarters at Washington for the preservation of public peace in this department, I have arrested, and do detain in custody of the United States, the late members of the Board of Police". General Banks then sent troops to Frederick and the Maryland legislature was arrested. Perhaps not the entire legislature but enough of its members so that the legislature in session was left without a quorum. "S. Teacle Wallis, the author of the report in defense of the constitutional rights of citizens, was among those arrested." Maryland's lawful, God given right to self-government was taken and Maryland was under the tyrant's heel. Maryland was the first state to lose her sovereignty after gaining her independence from England barely 80 some years before. The death of the Republic of Republics was at hand. Lincoln finished his task and the constitution died on the 9th of April, 1865. -- Join the Militia of Montana Email Alert List by writing to: militia@montana.com with "SUBSCRIBE" in the Subject Line!
